Meet our Event coordinator – Lisa
For the past five years, Lisa has been travelling to the Philippines working with children in the most poverty stricken areas of Manila. During 2006, she lived in Antipolo for a number of months working as a teacher in a pre-school (City Gates) funded by a church in London.
Lisa worked closely with children and their families in the local community providing food, clothing, education, and basic health/hygiene, and workshops to those who need it most. Also being part of the livelihood programme, she worked in the local community fixing damaged homes that we would think of as nothing more than garden sheds.
Lisa comments: “These children have nothing, absolutely nothing. Their health is poor, their accommodation is poor, their sanitation is poor. The only way for them to live is to beg for food or money on the streets. At a very early age most of them have to look after older family members who are ill due to poor living conditions, which they will probably face when they are older, unable to afford education or hospital bills. It breaks my heart to see people in this situation. Thanks to City Gates, these children are provided with clothing, food, education, and love. But these are the lucky ones!”
